Yume: review, limits and a 15+ alternative

Yume is the closest thing to PLOXX that exists: a video chat where you appear as an avatar, which even mirrors your expressions in real time. But it is an 83 MB Android app recommended for ages 18 and up. PLOXX runs in the browser and welcomes 15 to 17 year olds, separated from adults.

About Yume

Yume, "dream" in Japanese, is published by Connecty corp. It is a video chat where you show up not as your face but as a character. Its promise fits in a line that could have been ours: connected through the heart, not the face.

Technically it is the closest thing to PLOXX in existence today, and on one point it goes further: the avatar mirrors your expressions and gestures in real time. A smile, a small wave, and the character does it too. One button starts a match, suggested topics help open the conversation, and reporting and blocking are built in. There is even a daily limit on how many people you can meet, which is a rather healthy design choice.

The app is alive: version 1.2.6 shipped on 27 June 2026. It openly targets people who find video calls intimidating, and fans of character culture and VTubers.

What it does well

  • The avatar follows your expressions and gestures live. On that specific point it beats ours.
  • The concept is right: not showing your face without giving up on being present.
  • Reporting and blocking built in, with review announced by the team.
  • A daily cap on how many people you meet, an unusual and rather protective choice.
  • Was maintained through summer 2026 (last version 1.3.2 dated 19 July 2026, before the Play listing was removed).

Where it falls short

  • Recommended for ages 18 and up. If you are 15 to 17, it is not an option for you.
  • Android only, and an 83 MB install. No web or iOS version announced.
  • Nothing happens without going through an app store.
  • Public information is thin: no pricing, no feature detail, no confirmed language options.
  • A real-time animated avatar implies a recent phone (Android 9 minimum) and uses more battery.

Our verdict

Yume is PLOXX's only real neighbour, and that is rather a compliment to the idea: two teams independently concluded that your face should not be the entry fee for a conversation. On avatar animation Yume does better than we do, and it is worth writing that down. The decisive difference is elsewhere: Yume is an Android app recommended for adults, PLOXX is a site that opens in a browser and welcomes 15 to 17 year olds by matching them with each other, separately from adults. If you are a minor, on an iPhone, on a computer, or unwilling to install anything, the question does not arise. One note of honesty to close: Yume is a young app with a small community, and we are in no position to hold that against it while PLOXX is still in prelaunch.

Can my teenager use Yume?

Not through official channels right now: the Play listing disappeared at the end of August 2026, and the publisher recommended 18 and up anyway. If it is installed on a phone, it came from an APK site, which is a risk in itself.

Is an avatar enough to make a video chat safe?

No. It takes the face out of the picture, which matters, but the conversation still needs moderation and a way to report someone in one gesture. Judge any service on those two, not on the avatar alone.

My teenager already uses it. What now?

Talk about it before taking the phone away: ask what they like about it, then look at the reporting and blocking tools together. Then check the one thing that matters most, whether adults and minors can be matched together. When a service does not say, or says 18+, it was not built with your child in mind, and that is worth saying out loud.

What does PLOXX do differently?

PLOXX runs in the browser, accepts people from 15 with an age declared once, shows an avatar instead of the face, has one-tap reporting and continuous moderation, and sells nothing but cosmetics: nobody pays to talk.

Since 27 August 2026 the question no longer arises through official channels: Yume's Google Play listing is gone, and there is no iOS or web version. If it comes back, the split stays the same: 18 or over on a recent Android, Yume; 15 to 17, on an iPhone or a computer, or to play and level up with the people you meet, PLOXX.
