Watch YouTube together: synced video with your friends

The problem it solves

The usual method is "3, 2, 1, play" over a voice call. It works for thirty seconds, then someone pauses, someone gets an ad, and you are no longer in the same place in the video.

A synced TV fixes that: the playback position is shared. When one person pauses, everyone pauses. You are genuinely watching the same thing at the same moment.

How it works

1. Open the group room and invite your friends (up to 10 people).
2. Paste a YouTube link in the chat, or drag it straight onto the TV.
3. Playback syncs for every member of the room.
4. Choose who drives. The host by default, but a checkbox opens the controls to everyone.

The chat stays visible next to the video: that is where half the fun happens.

What sets it apart from watch party extensions

• Nothing to install. No browser extension, no account, no plugin. It runs in the page.
• The group already exists. The room is not an empty hall: it is your friends' hangout, with chat, reactions and sounds.
• It works on phones. PLOXX installs as a PWA in two taps, no app store.
• Built-in reporting. A button reports an inappropriate video to moderation.

Inviting people, in practice

The room opens from the home screen, in your friends area. To bring someone in you need their friend code, six characters that everyone finds on their profile: you type it, the person receives the invitation, and they come in when they accept. Nobody lands in a room without being invited by a member, which settles the question of strangers walking in halfway through a video.

If you are already a squad, it is shorter: the squad's HQ is open to its members, no invitation needed. That is the most common case, and the one where the TV earns its place: the week's quests get discussed, clash replays get watched, and the squad has somewhere to be when there is nothing to do.

Who it is for

People who are not in the same place, first. A school group scattered after a move, a squad whose members live in London, Lyon and Casablanca, two friends who met on PLOXX and want to share something other than a conversation. The video gives everyone a subject, the chat does the rest.

People who have nothing to say, next. A call where nobody talks is painful; a video playing while the chat comments on it is not. It is the simplest way to spend an evening together without having to carry the conversation, and it is often how a squad that has just formed turns into a group of friends.

And people who are going to watch the same thing anyway: the replay of a tournament, the clip that just dropped, the video everyone is talking about. Better to start it in the room and react live than to send each other the link and reply three hours later.

What it does not do, honestly

• YouTube only. The room TV plays YouTube links, not Netflix, not Twitch, not a video file. That is a choice: nothing to install, no third-party account to connect.
• YouTube's rules apply. A video whose owner has disabled playback outside YouTube, or that carries an age restriction, will not start in the room. And the ads you may see are YouTube's, not ours.
• Ten people, not fifty. The group room is built for a group of friends, not for a hall. Beyond ten, syncing would make no sense anyway: nobody follows a chat with fifty people in it.
• A room, not a channel. There is no schedule and no public hall to walk into and watch with strangers: you watch with the people in the room, meaning your friends or your squad. To meet strangers, that is the evening queue.

If those limits work for you, the rest is simple: one link, and everyone watches the same thing at the same moment.

Things to do during and after the video

A watching session flows well into the rest: a few rounds of Would You Rather between videos, a 2v2 against another duo, or a squad clash.
