HOLLA: review, limits and a 15+ alternative
Active, international mobile app
HOLLA is a mobile random video chat with a large international base, but it requires signup and keeps key features behind a subscription. Its community is mostly not French-speaking. PLOXX puts French speakers first, with no account, and keeps the core free.

About HOLLA
HOLLA is a mobile random video chat app built on swiping: you cycle through matches with a gesture, backed by a very international user base.
The app polishes the phone experience and offers filters, but it requires signup and reserves part of its features for a subscription.
What it does well
- Smooth mobile experience, built for smartphones.
- Large international user base, so little waiting.
- Fast swipe format, pleasant for cycling through people.
Where it falls short
- Mandatory signup.
- Overwhelmingly non-French-speaking community: many chats die on the language barrier.
- Key features behind a subscription.
- No option to chat without showing your face.
Our verdict
HOLLA is technically solid on mobile, but as a French speaker you will spend a lot of time skipping people you cannot talk to. PLOXX translates messages into your language automatically, installs on phones too, and requires no account.
What we checked, and when
Checked on 9 September 2026. Checked on 9 September 2026 on Google Play and in HOLLA's own terms. The store rating and the terms do not say the same thing, so we quote both.
- Google Play lists HOLLA (publisher HOLLA Group) with a PEGI 18 content rating, in-app purchases and ads, over 10 million downloads, last updated 12 August 2026. (source : Google Play)
- The terms ask users to affirm they are "either more than 18 years of age or possess legal parental or guardian consent", and elsewhere that they are "at least 13 years of age". (source : terms of service)
- The same terms state that the HOLLA Prime subscription "starts at USD 19.99/month" and that deleting the app from a device does not cancel a subscription. (source : terms of service)
- The service is owned and operated by EXU (HK) LIMITED, Kwun Tong, Hong Kong (terms, sections 1.4 and 22). (source : terms of service)
- Neither the listing nor the terms describe any separation between adults and minors in matching; the age is what the user affirms. (source : terms of service)
- On purchases, the terms add: "If you are under 18 (or younger than the age of legal majority in your place of residence), you must obtain your parent's or guardian's consent", which confirms the service expects minors to be present. (source : terms of service)
For parents
Is HOLLA for teenagers?
Google Play rates it PEGI 18, and its own terms ask users to be over 18 or to have parental consent, while also mentioning 13. Read that as: adults are the audience, and the age check is a box to tick.
What should I look at before saying yes?
Whether adults and minors can be matched together, whether reporting takes one gesture, and what the subscription unlocks. HOLLA describes no age separation, and its subscription starts at USD 19.99 a month.
My teenager already uses it. What now?
Talk about it before taking the phone away: ask what they like about it, then look at the reporting and blocking tools together. Then check the one thing that matters most, whether adults and minors can be matched together. When a service does not say, or says 18+, it was not built with your child in mind, and that is worth saying out loud.
What does PLOXX do differently?
PLOXX runs in the browser, accepts people from 15 with an age declared once, shows an avatar instead of the face, has one-tap reporting and continuous moderation, and sells nothing but cosmetics: nobody pays to talk.
Frequently asked questions
Is HOLLA free?
Partly: core matching is, but several features need a subscription. On PLOXX, automatic chat translation is free for life.
Are there French speakers on HOLLA?
Few: the community is very international and it is down to chance. PLOXX looks for a French speaker first before widening.
Do you need to download an app for HOLLA?
Yes, it is a mobile app. PLOXX runs in the browser and installs as a PWA if you want an icon, with no app store.
