About Chatroulette
Chatroulette was created in 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy, a 17-year-old high-schooler in Moscow. It exploded within months, passing a million daily visitors in early 2010 and cementing itself in internet culture.
It is still online today, making it the oldest active player in the space. Its popularity has declined sharply, though, and the platform added automated detection to filter explicit content.
What it does well

Our verdict
Chatroulette remains a historical curiosity worth trying for what it represents. But if you want a day-to-day platform, on mobile, or simply one where you do not have to expose your face, PLOXX fits 2026 usage far better.

For parents
Is Chatroulette for teenagers?
No, in writing, twice: the terms forbid anyone under 18, and the safety page uses age estimation to keep minors out.
It has the most detailed safety page of all, so why not?
Because the page itself says 18+ and explains how it enforces it. A serious safety programme is a reason for adults to prefer this service, not a reason to let a 15-year-old in.
My teenager already uses it. What now?
Talk about it before taking the phone away: ask what they like about it, then look at the reporting and blocking tools together. Then check the one thing that matters most, whether adults and minors can be matched together. When a service does not say, or says 18+, it was not built with your child in mind, and that is worth saying out loud.
What does PLOXX do differently?
