Chatspin: review, limits and a 15+ alternative

Active, aggressive freemium

Chatspin offers face masks and country/gender filters, but most sit behind a monthly paywall. The free tier is deliberately stripped down to push subscriptions. PLOXX refuses that playbook: core matching, interests and friends stay free for life.

About Chatspin

Chatspin stands out with face filters (real-time "masks" applied over your webcam) plus country and gender filters. The mask idea answers a genuine need: not exposing yourself fully on video.

In practice, most of these features sit behind a monthly subscription, and the free experience is deliberately thinned out to drive conversions.

What it does well

  • Face masks offer a form of visual protection, rare in this space.
  • Country and gender filters available to target matches.
  • Mobile app available.

Where it falls short

  • Most useful features sit behind a monthly subscription.
  • The free tier is deliberately throttled to frustrate you into paying.
  • No friends system: no way to reconnect with anyone.
  • The mask is still a layer over your real camera - not true visual anonymity.

Our verdict

Chatspin understood the need to not expose yourself, but answers it with a paid mask laid over your real webcam. PLOXX takes the logic all the way with a full avatar, free, that replaces the camera entirely - and keeps automatic chat translation free.

What we checked, and when

For parents

Is Chatspin for teenagers?

No: 18 and over, in the guidelines and on the safety page. The "looks under 18" report reason is a good sign that the team knows minors get in, and a reminder that the door does not stop them.

Do the face masks protect a child?

A mask is a layer over a real camera feed. It can be switched off in one tap, and it changes nothing about who is on the other side. It is a privacy feature for adults, not a safety feature for children.

My teenager already uses it. What now?

Talk about it before taking the phone away: ask what they like about it, then look at the reporting and blocking tools together. Then check the one thing that matters most, whether adults and minors can be matched together. When a service does not say, or says 18+, it was not built with your child in mind, and that is worth saying out loud.

What does PLOXX do differently?

PLOXX runs in the browser, accepts people from 15 with an age declared once, shows an avatar instead of the face, has one-tap reporting and continuous moderation, and sells nothing but cosmetics: nobody pays to talk.

Frequently asked questions

Are Chatspin's masks free?

Only partly; most filters and masks belong to the paid subscription. On PLOXX, the avatar that hides your face entirely is free.

Is a face mask enough to stay anonymous?

Not really: the mask is a layer applied over your real camera feed. An avatar like PLOXX's replaces the camera completely, so your face is never transmitted.

Does Chatspin have a friends system?

No. Once the conversation ends, the person is gone for good. PLOXX gives you a 6-character friend code to reconnect.
