The impostor word game

Everyone gets the same word. Except one person, who gets a neighbouring one. Each player gives a clue, then you vote to unmask the odd one out. The good surprise: the impostor does not know they are the impostor, and that changes everything.

The rules in thirty seconds

  1. Everyone gets a word. The civilians all share the same one - "Beach", say. The impostor gets a neighbour: "Pool".
  2. One clue each. A single word or a short phrase, related to what you received. Too precise and you expose yourself; too vague and you look like the odd one out.
  3. Then you vote. Whoever collects the most votes is unmasked. If it really was the impostor, the civilians win. If not, they get away with it.

What makes this version different

Nobody knows their own role. That is the important part, and it is rare. In most games of this kind the impostor knows they have to bluff. Here you get a word and that is it: you find out you are the odd one out by hearing everyone else's clues drift away from yours. The doubt is shared by everyone, including the culprit.

The direct consequence: nobody can put on an act. The clues are sincere, which makes wrong accusations far funnier - and right ones far more satisfying.

If you know Among Us, the idea of finding the impostor is the same. The difference: this is played with words, in a conversation, and a round lasts three minutes instead of twenty.

The word pairs

28 pairs sit in the bank, and the words are picked close without being identical: Beach / Pool, Dog / Cat, Pizza / Burger, Summer / Winter, Coffee / Tea. That closeness is what makes bluffing possible - an impostor handed an absurd word would be caught on the first clue.

They are simple common nouns, deliberately universal: no cultural reference to know, nothing awkward, and each player sees their word in their own language. A round between an English speaker and a Dutch speaker works without anyone translating anything.

How many players, and where you play

Three players minimum - below that there is no deduction to be had and the game refuses to start. It runs in the group room, with your friends or your squad, up to ten people.

If someone has to leave mid-round, the game carries on for everyone else. And there is nothing to install: it is built into the conversation, so nobody switches tabs - the principle we cover on the games to play on a video call page.

Frequently asked questions

How does the impostor word game work?

Everyone gets the same word except one person, who gets a neighbouring word. Each player gives a clue, then you vote to unmask the odd one out. The twist: the impostor does not know they are the impostor and finds out by listening to the others.

How many players do you need?

Three minimum, up to ten in a group room. Below three there is no deduction possible and the game will not start.

Is it like Among Us?

The idea of unmasking an impostor is the same, but this is played with words in a conversation, not in a map to explore. A round lasts about three minutes.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The game is built into the group room, in the browser, with no account and no download.

Does it work if we do not speak the same language?

Yes. Each player sees their word in their own language, out of six available. Only the clues are exchanged, and that is the whole game.
