No language app replaces a real conversation. Duolingo teaches you vocabulary; talking to a real speaker teaches you to speak. Random video chat is an ideal - and free - practice ground, whether you're improving English or any other language.
Why real conversation beats apps
- Real pace. People don't talk like lessons. You pick up contractions, slang, hesitations - the real language.
- Active listening. Understanding an accent live, without subtitles, is the hardest skill to build. Nothing trains it better than a real conversation.
- Motivation. Successfully making yourself understood by a stranger gives a motivation hit no lesson streak can match.
How to use it on PLOXX
- Write in the language you want to practise. The queue is not split by language, and automatic translation helps if the other person answers in another one.
- Say what you're doing. Open with "I'm practising my [language]" - most people happily play along.
- Start as an avatar if you're nervous. Speaking a foreign language is already stressful; not showing your face removes a layer of pressure.
- Keep the good ones. Someone patient and friendly? Add them as a friend (6-character code) and do regular sessions.
